Dog-Friendly Beaches in Barry
Seasonal
Barry has a seafront on its own doorstep and a run of bays either side of the town, and Vale of Glamorgan Council sets the dog rules for all of them. Here you will find where your dog can go, month by month, from Summerhouse Bay round to Penarth. The wider picture is on our guide to dog-friendly beaches in the UK.
Are there dog friendly beaches in Barry?
Yes, but dogs are banned from Cold Knap in Barry from 1 May to 30 September.
Vale of Glamorgan Council also bans dogs from Whitmore Bay at Barry Island in those months. Watch Tower Bay, Jackson’s Bay, Porthkerry, Fontygary Bay and the bays further out stay open to your dog.

Tell me when it is readyThe rules, and when they apply
Two kinds of rule cover the beaches around Barry. The council bans dogs from named stretches in summer, and it lists the other beaches as places where your dog is welcome. The colour of each row is the answer, and the twelve cells are the year.
Cold Knap and Penarth (Pier to Yacht Club): no dogs, 1 May to 30 September
Council ban
Vale of Glamorgan Council bans dogs from the whole of Cold Knap in those months, and from Whitmore Bay at Barry Island. At Penarth the ban covers only the beach between the Pier and the Yacht Club, and the decking of Penarth Pier. From 1 October to 30 April you may walk your dog on all of them.
Watch Tower Bay and Old Harbour, Jackson’s Bay, Porthkerry, Fontygary Bay, Aberthaw Beach The Leys, St Mary’s Well Bay and Summerhouse Bay: dogs allowed all year
Council list
The council names these beaches as places where your dog is welcome in summer, and its ban does not reach them. A landowner or nature body may add its own conditions, so follow any sign you find. The council also lists the Penarth stretch from the Pier to the Barrage as open to dogs.

Our own place · an example
Gwel an Derowen, Townshend, west Cornwall
Two bedrooms on a working smallholding at Townshend, in west Cornwall. Enclosed garden, a hot tub. We own this one, and take no commission on it. It is about 125 miles from Barry by straight line, so it is not a place to stay for this beach. We show it as an example of what we look for in a dog-friendly stay. It is ours, and we say so.
Barry beaches with a dog, from Summerhouse Bay to Penarth
Barry has one rule-maker, which keeps your planning simple. Vale of Glamorgan Council bans dogs from a short list of named beaches between 1 May and 30 September, and it treats that ban as a requirement rather than a request. Outside those dates the ban does not apply, so you can use every beach along this coast from 1 October to 30 April.
The beach in front of the town is the one to watch. Cold Knap is closed to your dog from 1 May to 30 September, and so is Whitmore Bay at Barry Island a little further east. You do not have to go far for an alternative. Watch Tower Bay and Old Harbour lie between the two, within about half a mile of each, and the council lists them as open to dogs in summer.
Jackson’s Bay is the next cove east, and it is also open. Council toilets at Redbrink Crescent open from May to October, and the Harbour Road car park has toilets from Easter to October. St Mary’s Well Bay, further east again, is on the same council list, but the path down is very steep and not for the less agile.
West of Barry the coast is quieter. Porthkerry has a pebble beach in a country park, with a cafe, toilets and a car park, and you reach the shingle on a tarmac path. Beyond it Fontygary Bay, Aberthaw Beach and Summerhouse Bay are all open to your dog. Summerhouse Bay has no road, so you walk the coast path from the free car park at Limpert Bay. At Penarth the ban covers only the beach between the Pier and the Yacht Club, so walk towards the Barrage if you want the open stretch.
One caution on dates. The council order we found says it runs for three years from 15 July 2024, so it is due to be renewed or replaced by July 2027. The council page does not date its list of banned beaches. Follow any sign that says otherwise.

Names and charges are from Vale of Glamorgan Council pages read in October 2026, and may change. Jackson’s Bay and Watch Tower Bay have no car park of their own, and the council names none for them, so Harbour Road and Nell’s Point are the nearest. We could not find a car park for Fontygary Bay, so there is no card for it.
