Our own place · an example

Gwel an Derowen, Townshend, west Cornwall

Two bedrooms on a working smallholding at Townshend, in west Cornwall. Enclosed garden, a hot tub. We own this one, and take no commission on it. It is about 281 miles from Isle of Grain by straight line, so it is not a place to stay for this beach. We show it as an example of what we look for in a dog-friendly stay. It is ours, and we say so.

What the dog rules mean for you at Grain

Medway Council has a dog management order, and it is the only dog rule we could confirm that reaches Grain. The order does not mention beaches or the foreshore, so we found no beach rule. That means we cannot tell you that your dog is allowed or banned on the sand, and we do not say it is open.

What the order does say applies to you wherever it reaches. You must follow a direction from a constable or an authorised officer to put your dog on a lead of no more than 2 metres. A lead is also required on roads, pavements and verges, you may have no more than 4 dogs, and dogs are excluded from play areas, including the Grain recreation ground.

The order summaries we had did not include the schedules, so we could not check which land is covered. We could not confirm a Medway rule for the Grain shore, and the landowner and nature-body rules are not confirmed. Harbour and foreshore rules are not confirmed either.

Because of that gap, treat Grain as a place to check before you go. Look for signs at your access point, keep a lead with you in case you are directed to use it. Signs on the day take priority. A sign on the day beats anything we have written.

How we checked this page

Read on 16 October 2026 as summaries of three Medway Council pages: the dog management order page, the dog exclusion zones page and the lead areas page. The schedules were not on those pages, so we could not check which land the order covers. We found no beach rule, no car park and no facilities. Landowner, nature-body, harbour and foreshore rules are not confirmed. Anything we could not confirm is marked as not yet confirmed.
