Dog-Friendly Beaches in Mumbles
Seasonal
Mumbles is the headland where Swansea Bay ends and the Gower coast begins. Swansea Council sets one dog rule for the summer and another for the rest of the year. Here you will find where your dog can go, month by month, from Pobbles round to the River Tawe. The wider picture is on our guide to dog-friendly beaches in the UK.
Are there dog friendly beaches in Mumbles?
Yes, but dogs are banned from Bracelet Bay, Limeslade, Rotherslade and Langland from 1 May to 30 September.
Swansea Council makes that ban a byelaw. Knab Rock at Mumbles, Pwll Du and Pobbles stay open to your dog all year, and your dog stays on a lead on the promenades.

Tell me when it is readyThe rules, and when they apply
Three kinds of rule cover the beaches around Mumbles. Swansea Council bans dogs from the bays and the Swansea Bay end in summer. It lists a few beaches as open all year, and keeps your dog on a lead on the promenades. The colour of each row is the answer, and the twelve cells are the year.
Swansea Bay from the Tawe to Victoria Park, Black Pill, Bracelet Bay, Limeslade Bay, Rotherslade Bay and Langland Bay: no dogs, 1 May to 30 September
Council byelaw
Swansea Council restricts dogs and their owners to the dog friendly beaches in these months. The ban covers Swansea Bay from the River Tawe to the slip opposite Victoria Park, and from the Sketty Lane beach access to the northern edge of the West Cross Inn slip. Black Pill lies between those two points, so the ban applies there. It also covers the four bays beside Mumbles. From 1 October to 30 April your dog may use them.
Knab Rock (Mumbles), Pwll Du and Pobbles: dogs allowed all year
Council list
The council lists Mumbles, Pwll Du and Pobbles among the beaches open to dogs all year. Pwll Du and Pobbles lie on National Trust land, which asks you to keep your dog on a lead near livestock. Follow any sign you find on the day.
Promenades at Swansea Bay, Langland and Rotherslade: on a lead all year
Council byelaw
The council requires your dog on a lead along the whole Swansea Bay promenade, from the River Tawe to the Knab Rock car park in Mumbles, and on the promenades at Langland Bay, Rotherslade and Caswell Bay. A fixed penalty notice can follow if your dog is off the lead.

Our own place · an example
Gwel an Derowen, Townshend, west Cornwall
Two bedrooms on a working smallholding at Townshend, in west Cornwall. Enclosed garden, a hot tub. We own this one, and take no commission on it. It is about 116 miles from Mumbles by straight line, so it is not a place to stay for this beach. We show it as an example of what we look for in a dog-friendly stay. It is ours, and we say so.
Mumbles beaches with a dog, from Pobbles to the River Tawe
Mumbles is where the city beaches end and the Gower cliffs begin, and your dog has two different years here. Between 1 May and 30 September Swansea Council restricts dogs and their owners to a list of dog friendly beaches. From 1 October to 30 April the sand is open to your dog, though the lead rules on the promenades stay in force all year.
The bays beside the village are closed to your dog in summer. Bracelet Bay, Limeslade Bay, Rotherslade Bay and Langland Bay all carry the ban from 1 May to 30 September. So does Swansea Bay from the River Tawe to the slip opposite Victoria Park. Knab Rock is the exception. The council lists Mumbles among the beaches open to dogs all year, and the Knab Rock car park has public toilets and a slipway beside it.
Your dog stays on a lead on the Swansea Bay promenade from the Tawe to the Knab Rock car park in every month. The same goes for the promenades at Langland Bay and Rotherslade. Black Pill sits on the stretch of Swansea Bay between the Sketty Lane access and the West Cross Inn slip, where the ban also applies. Between the slip opposite Victoria Park and the Sketty Lane access, the sand is open to your dog all year.
For a summer walk with room to roam, go west. Pwll Du and Pobbles are both on the council list of beaches open all year. Both are a walk from the car park rather than a step from it. Pwll Du is about 400 metres from the nearest parking along a rough path. You reach Pobbles on foot from Southgate, where the climb back is fairly strenuous. Neither has toilets or refreshments, so bring water for your dog and keep a lead handy near livestock.
One caution on dates. The council asked for views on the Swansea Bay byelaw in July and August 2024. Its dogs on beaches page, read on 30 October 2026, still lists the stretches above. The page gives no byelaw date or map, so look for the council signs at the access points. The sign on the day is what counts.

The Langland page gives no charge we could rely on, and we could not find a car park for Black Pill. Check the machine on the day.
Facilities, access and what to watch

The council page gives no byelaw date or map, so we could not confirm the exact slip positions, and it does not name Black Pill, so its place in the ban is read from the stretch either side. Map pins show where each stretch lies and are approximate. Rules change, and the sign on the beach is what you will be judged by.
